The Dinosaur Trail offers the opportunity to discover how Cuenca looked million years ago and offers and insight into ecosystems inhabited by dinosaurs and other groups of animals and plants.
Dubbed Pepito, it used to live in what is now one of the most important paleontological sites in Europe: Las Hoyas. Las Hoyas was formed about 125 million years ago during the later Cretaceous era, wherein more than 132 different genera of animals and plants were recorded.
In 2007, the works of the AVE Madrid-Levante brought the site of Spain´s largest dinosaurs to light. Intensive excavation of six months allowed the researchers to recover more than 14,000 fossils

In the spring of 2007, during construction of AVE Madrid-Levante, a large accumulation of fossil bones was discovered in the municipality of Fuentes. The site is located a few kilometres from the capital, and although not accessible, thanks to the Interpretation Centre of Fuentes, you can discover the unique past that lies beneath the characteristic sunflower fields in the territory. The exhibition centre explains the life and habitat of fish, crocodiles, turtles or sauropods such as titanosaurs. All fossils found among the more than 14,000 excavated remains, make this corner of the Serrania a unique place in the European paleontological context.

In the dedicated site of Las Hoyas, located in the town of Cañada del Hoyo, you will discover how this deposit was formed, and why it is undoubtedly the most important dinosaur site in the Iberian Peninsula.

Lagunas de Cañada del Hoyo
At the heart of the Serrania de Cuenca lies one of the most important paleontological sites in Europe: Las Hoyas. Las Hoyas was formed about 125 million years ago during the later Cretaceous era, wherein more than 132 different genera of animals and plants were recorded.
The interpretive centre of Canada del Hoyo has a 3D photograph of the lake ecosystem, which is the most important place for researching the aquatic vegetation and the variety of species that inhabited it. Its value is incalculable for its variety and because it has preserved remains of unique animals like the famous Pepito (Concavenator Corcovatus), the hunchback hunter from Cuenca.
